Kata

Kata is form, or shape.

In martial arts, Kata is a sequence of movements that record combative knowledge. In the old days kata was a teaching aid for passing on martial arts from master to student. Back then, people may have been illiterate so kata was the way of sharing information. Obviously there were no YouTube videos to go searching for ancient secrets.

Some kata are old, hundreds of years. Others, not so old. Either way it is probable that they have changed over time, and their original meanings lost. Kata can be performed with weapons or unarmed.

Kata is exercise, a form of movement therapy. The body twists and turns, rises and falls, expands and contracts. Co-ordinated technique, mental concentration and focused breathing all add up to developing useful attributes.

Understanding the meaning of kata keeps martial artists busy enough. Techniques are broken into components, then sub-components and so on, to be used as methods of attack and defence. The application there for the taking.

Kata is all about transitions, it is animated. More like a video than a sequence of photos in a flick book. The real art of kata exists in the bits between the postures, so don't forget the meaning of the transitions.

Kata is exercise, knowledge, training, art and meditation all rolled into one. With daily practice and effort we can use kata to improve our lives.
