Unravelling the knots

The ancient text of the Tao Te Ching says to "unravel the knots" (Ch 4.)

Unravelling the knots, unwinding that which is caught up in itself. Simplify that which is overly complex.

Unravelling knots implies a letting go, as in relaxing while releasing thoughts, negative vibes or unnecessary tension. When we live in a half-tense, half-relaxed state we never become properly relaxed.

In karate training sanchin shows us how to "unrelax", in other words we learn to tense before we can relax. The kata reorganises the body into new shapes, which we can eventually relax into properly. Over time the tension becomes springiness, both relaxed and not relaxed at the same time.

The knots we hold on to are slowly unravelled.
